damn my over-aroused self. i’ve been trying to sleep but too much has happened tonight, so I can’t stop thinking and wanting to get up and resolve all these half-resolved issues that are floating around. but I have to get up early! so should be asleep!
today I converted my blog to moveable type. i’d been using b2 just because it was php, and I much prefer php to perl. however b2 is so inferior to mt! although I did like the livejournal integration. anyway I converted all the entries and now just need to redesign the mt one. I don’t really like the current design for the b2 one. but it’s not really anything, is it?
then another hosting server got DOS’d and went down. arrrrrrr rrr. as soon as one thing is fixed, another goes wrong.
had forensics from 3pm-8pm. in the tutorial we were split into groups again, they love doing that, and somehow I ended up with only one boy in my group again. but he seemed shy so I didn’t mind dreadfully. then the whole class (about 12 people) were split into two groups to debate whether someone who rapes an 8year old should receive the same sentence as someone who rapes a prostitute. Dionne, the tutor, tried to put us into the group with the opposite opinion that we as individuals had, and couldn’t seem to grasp that I had no opinion.
so I was put into the group to argue that the 8year old raper should get a harsher sentence. I quickly learned that the shy boy was actually just stupid. and our team lost. because we weren’t allowed to bring morals or anything like that into it, had to base our arguments on science and law. which is a lot easier for the equal sentence one! I think. I didn’t say much, except when the other side was saying, “well rape is rape, they’re both the same act, thus both are equal.”
I said, “well they’re not equal, because raping a prostitute is breaking one law, rape, and raping a child is breaking more than one, because you’re abusing a child. so you can’t say this one act into these two different circumstances are equal.”
then someone on the other side said, “but we’re not prosecuting for child abuse, we’re just prosecuting for the rape. you can’t bring child abuse into it. if the prostitute was murdered, you wouldn’t be able to include that in the rape.”
then I said, “that analogy doesn’t work, because raping the prostitute and then murdering her are two separate acts. this is the same, single act, which you are saying is equally wrong in both cases. if the same act breaks one law in one case and two in the other, then it can’t be equal, and shouldn’t be judged equally.”
when I speak in public I can remember every word for hours afterwards. then I go over and over it later and pick apart everything that was wrong with it. I know nothing about law, so was probably completely wrong. but I still got a point.
